Babinda is a small coastal town with its industry and commerce based on sugar production. The Babinda mill is in the centre of the town and commenced cane crushing in 1915. On average over the past 30 years Babinda has claimed the title of Australia's wettest town. Maybe the citizens of Tully don't agree.
There is a Main Street with a variety of shops and a supermarket. The Babinda Hotel is heritage listed. The surrounding area is mainly sugar farms or tropical fruit farms.
Babinda is about 20 minutes drive south of Cairns.
The township of Babinda is worth a visit if you're driving along the Bruce Highway. Although it may look like another quiet country sugar town quickly losing its population, it does have some interesting sites to offer.
The Babinda Boulders is a popular swimming hole. It's a good example of the fast flowing tropical creeks in the area that are perfect for cool dip on a hot North Queensland day.
The creek is lined with huge boulders and the clear fresh water flows between the rocks to fill large pools where people swim.
While swimming at the Boulders, it is important to be safety conscious and not take risks. The fast flowing water has taken 15 lives since 1959, mostly young men. Please be careful.
But don't be put you off! It is a beautiful place and with common sense is very safe.
How to get to Babinda Boulders
The Boulders are located 7 kilometres from Babinda.
From the Bruce Highway, turn off at the town of Babinda. Road signs then direct the way.
The Mulgrave and Russell Rivers pass close to the town and there is excellent fishing in the rivers, estuaries, islands and nearby coral reefs. The town of Babinda is surrounded by natural wonders. Queensland's highest mountain Bartle Frere (1622 m) is close by as is Mount Bellenden Ker (1593 m). Just to the SW of Babinda is Josephine Falls, very pretty and popular with tourists and locals.
