Cairns is a tropical paradise city in North Queensland, Australia. Cairns was first settled in 1876, and named after William Cairns, the Governor of Queensland at the time. Cairns was originally a shanty town of miners, fishermen and adventurers. (see history). Cairns fortunes waxed and waned as mineral deposits were found or exciting new fields were discovered at other locations. At one time both Port Douglas and Cooktown were more prosperous than Cairns.
The future of Cairns was ensured as a railhead and major sea and air ports were developed for the exportation of sugar cane, gold, precious metals and agricultural industries from the surrounding coastal and Tableland regions. The diversity of industry as well as the massive influx of national and international visitors discovering this tropical paradise has led to enormous growth and prosperity.
Cairns is rapidly expanding, with a population of aproximately 130,000 as at 2007 and is growing at a much faster rate than the national average. Cairns lies in a tropical paradise at Lattitude 16.55 South and Longitude 145.28 East.
Cairns is about 1,700 from Brisbane by road and just a couple of hours to the Brisbane CBD via modern jet services. Cairns is the international airport and seaport to North Queensland and serves as the business hub for the Cairns Highlands, Port Douglas, Daintree and Innisfail areas.
Cairns is a popular with both local and foreign tourists alike because of its tropical climate (see geography) and proximity to many exciting natural attractions (see entertainment). The Great Barrier Reef is one of the natural wonders of the world, The Tropical Tablelands with all the beauty and splendour are just a few hours pleasant drive, Port Douglas and the magnificient Daintree rainforest are a short drive along the Captain Cook Highway with its breathtaking ocean scenery and no visit would be complete without a visit to Kuranda via Skyrail.
